Neue Zeitung für Einsiedler (Magazin der Internationalen Arnim-Gesellschaft), ed. Roswitha Burwick
Arnim joined his friend Clemens Brentano in Heidelberg to edit Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1805, 1808) and initiate the short-lived Zeitung für Einsiedler to rediscover “Volkspoesie” through fairy tales, stories, anecdotes, poems, and songs. Published from April to August 1808, the Zeitung, an attempt at a new kind of journalism, is still considered one of the most innovative magazines of the literary romantic period. In his spirit, the Internationale Arnim-Gesellschaft founded in 2000/2001 the Neue Zeitung für Einsiedler (NZfE), which grew from a small brochure (50 p.) to a comprehensive yearbook (364 pp.). Today, the Neue Zeitung für Einsiedler is an interdisciplinary journal that offers innovative approaches to the works of well-known German Romantic writers and introduces newly discovered sources and texts that provide material for further investigation of topics pertinent to contemporary discourse. In addition to literary articles and miscellaneous pieces, the Neue Zeitung für Einsiedler contains reports on Arnim sites, exhibitions, and book reviews. The current editor chose Arnim’s »Findet, so werdet ihr suchen!« (Find, and you will search) – an entry in Wilhelm Grimm’s Stammbuch – as a motto to offer an opportunity to engage both in the »scherzenden Gemisch« (whimsical medley) and the thought-provoking discourse of romantic aesthetics, as Arnim promoted in his Zeitung für Einsiedler in 1808.
The Zeitung für Einsiedler is published every two years. Manuscripts (essays, miscellaneous, reports on exhibits, etc.) for vol. 18/2026 should be sent to Roswitha Burwick ([email protected] or [email protected]) by January 15, 2026.
