Please join us at PAMLA 2024 for our three Southern California Museum sponsored events:
Thursday, November 7 (5:10 – 6:35 pm, Crosby Ballroom B) – Setting, Story, and the Visual: Artists’ Panel Discussion (Hosted by the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art)
In this wide-ranging discussion, artists from desert cities will discuss the presence and shape of narrative in their visual art practice, and the influences that shape their work. Artists include mixed-media artist Caitlyn Clester, conceptual artist and performer Xavier Cázares Cortéz, and visual artist and storyteller Willie Little. Hosted by the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Friday, November 8 (1:25 – 2:25 pm, Crosby Ballroom B) – The Power of Language in Conceptual and Contemporary Art (Palm Springs Art Museum)
Language is powerful: it can inspire us or defeat us; it can be the foundation of community and identity but can fluctuate in meaning depending on who is speaking. We will explore how various contemporary Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists use the power of language to address socio-political, cultural, and personal experiences and perspectives. The examination of diverse artistic approaches will highlight how words can complement, contrast, and enhance visual expressions, creating rich, multifaceted works of art. Through case studies of notable artworks by Ed Ruscha, Jeffrey Gibson, Gerald Clarke, June Wayne, and members of the art collective Postcommodity, this session aims to provide insights into interplays between language and imagery, exploring artists’ installations that employ a combination of sound and visual elements.
Saturday, November 9 (1:15 – 2:40 pm, Crosby Ballroom C) – Narrative in the Visual Arts (Hosted by the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art)
In what ways can works of visual art portray a narrative, and in what ways are they constrained? This session focuses on one questions of how visual art works can make use of a narrative, and how narrative works differently in visual works. Panelists include Charles Hatfield, Mary Trunk, Tim Keane, and Patrick Herrigan.
Exciting Note: The Palm Springs Art Museum will allow PAMLA conference attendees wearing their conference name tag free entrance into the museum over the weekend of the PAMLA conference.
