Memory and Migration in German-Language Literature and Film

Presiding Officer:
Friederike von Schwerin-High, Pomona College

This session investigates the challenge to discourses of cultural memory posed by the efforts of a new generation of Germans with a migrant background. The session will explore the attempts of Germans with a migrant background to inscribe transnational memories into the master narrative of German identity and nationhood. This confluence of German and non-German cultural, national, and personal memories in the texts of migrant writers and filmmakers is playing an increasingly important role in rewriting accounts of Germanness, contesting the notion of a stable cultural memory and univocal representation of the past.
