Flickering Lightbulb

Debbie Sayachack, Fresno State University

This creative piece symbolizes a forbidden love that happens as a result of cultural differences.  The narrartor has no option but to internalize this pain and accept the fate that she and her lover can never be together because of the spaces they were born into.

This short creative piece represents the internalization and pain caused by forbidden love.  A love that is forbidden because distinct cultural differences and family arrangement poses a barrier. In comparing her pain to that of the flickering lightbulb that is close to dying, the speaker asks to simply be saved..."not trashed, replaced, or changed, but to simply be saved."
