The Inlandia Institute: Celebrating and Memorializing Literary Inlandia

Presiding Officer:
Cati Porter, Inlandia Institute

The Inlandia Institute is an organization dedicated to celebrating the Inland Empire, which roughly encompasses the entirety of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, anything located in southern California that is east of the ocean. The Inland Empire is an under-recognized region, yet writers as celebrated as John Steinbeck, Norman Mailer, Joan Didion, John Jakes, and Mary Austin have memorialized areas of this region through their writing. The idea of memorializing a place through literature is a natural outgrowth of the old adage, write what you know. As writers, we often turn to our immediate surroundings to create an environment for our creative work by anchoring it in the particulars of a place. Join Inlandia Institute authors for a reading and discussion exploring southern California's Inland Empire through writing, and learn about the organization that supports these writers of the region.
