Homely, Unhomely, Uncanny: The Familiar and the Unfamiliar in German Literature and Culture

Presiding Officer:
Roswitha Burwick, Scripps College

This panel takes it name from Freud's 1919 essay on "The Uncanny." The concept of "the uncanny" is seminal to German literature and culture from the 19th century to the present. It intervenes in concepts of home (Heimat), alienation, temporal disconnections, and family romances and horrors. Papers on any topics related to this theme are welcome.
