In Memoriam: Eugene Saxe

We are saddened to announce that dedicated PAMLA member Eugene W. Saxe (Gene) died on July 12, 2019. Gene was active in PAMLA, having presided for a number of years over the Shakespeare sessions at the annual conference. A gentleman scholar and a lover of Shakespeare and the theater, Gene fought for faculty rights, having served as lead plaintiff in a successful lawsuit to return tenure rights at MSU Denver (which took place when a previous Board decided to remove faculty tenure).

2019 PAMLA Conference Plenary Address

Please join us for the 2019 PAMLA Plenary Address and Luncheon on Saturday, November 16, beginning at 11:45 am. Our Plenary speaker, Dr. Paul Alonso, will be delivering an address titled Clowns and Court Jesters as Political Communicators: Mexican Brozo and Other TV Satirists in the Americas.” The Plenary Address Luncheon, which does involve an additional expense, is sure to be a highlight of the conference.

PAMLA Special Session Proposal Extended Deadline: March 31

Did you miss the March 16th deadline for special session proposals for the 2019 PAMLA Conference? Well, you are in luck! We are excited to announce that PAMLA is extending the deadline for special session proposals for the November 14-17, 2019 Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association Conference, in San Diego. Our new special session proposal deadline is now Sunday, March 31st.

Congratulations to PAMLA member Ariel Zatarain Tumbaga On His New Publication

Congratulations to PAMLA member Ariel Zatarain Tumbaga for his recent University of Arizona Press publication, Yaqui Indigeneity: Epistemology, Diaspora, and the Construction of Yoeme Identity. Dr. Ariel Zatarain Tumbaga is a teacher and scholar of Spanish language and Mexican and Chicana/o literatures and cultures. Born in Navojoa, Sonora, Dr. Tumbaga was raised in the Imperial Valley, California. He holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from UCLA. and has worked at UCLA, CSULA and Southern Oregon University teaching Spanish, culture and literature in translation.
