Iconic Images in Media

Presiding Officer:
Meghmik Mardian, Independent Scholar

Our daily lives are saturated with images, but among the mundane are the few—like the drowned Syrian refugee child—that stand out and become icons of some bigger issue in society. It is not only their stories that are important to analyze, but also the effect these images have on the population. No longer are we dependent on those with professional equipment and experience to show us images and stories from half a world away. Pictures taken by the people and of the people have a way of refocusing hearts and minds away from war/conflict/political agenda and to the lives of the individuals affected. This session will focus on these kinds of images as text and analyze their stories, context, and effect in our society.
